Brim Explorer to Launch the World’s First All-Electric High-Speed Trimarans

Backed by Enova: A Bold Step Toward Sustainable Travel

Brim Explorer has received 40 million nok in support from Enova to build what will be the world’s first two all-electric high-speed trimarans for passenger transport. Designed to travel at 20 knots for 100 nautical miles, entirely emission-free, these new vessels represent a technological leap, not only for Brim Explorer, but for the entire maritime industry. Built on our own operational experience, the trimarans will be several tons lighter than comparable vessels and are expected to become the most energy-efficient ships of their kind.

  • Run at 20 knots for a full 100 nautical miles (almost 200 km)

  • Be several tons lighter than their competitors

  • Driven 100% electrically in the beautiful – and soon emission-free – Geirangerfjord from 2027

Brim Explorer receives support for two battery-electric vessels that will operate between Ålesund and Geiranger, among other things. The ships have a number of innovative energy efficiency measures and will have battery packs of approximately 3 MWh.

This project reflects a wider shift in Norway’s maritime sector, where both passenger and cargo vessels are moving rapidly toward electrification. From container ships to fjord ferries, the country is positioning itself as a global leader in clean maritime innovation. Our investment is part of this momentum, and a clear signal that sustainable travel isn’t just about slowing down, but about moving forward smarter. The trimarans will begin sailing through the iconic and soon-to-be emission-free Geirangerfjord from 2027, setting a new standard for what electric travel can look like.

With this new investment, we are building a zero-emission vessel as well as an optimised platform for the future of tourism. At Brim Explorer, we believe that experiencing nature shouldn’t come at the cost of harming it. These new vessels represent our commitment to creating sustainable experiences at sea, without compromising on comfort, speed or design.”

Built for the Emission-Free Future

The Geirangerfjord, along with several other Norwegian fjords, has been designated a World Heritage site, and with that comes new environmental responsibility. From 1 January 2026, all passenger vessels under 10,000 gross tonnes will be required to operate emission-free in these protected areas. Our new trimarans are designed with this future in mind. Fully electric, lightweight, and built for performance, they will meet and exceed these requirements, making them an ideal match for operating in sensitive natural areas. As regulations shift, Brim Explorer is ready — not just to comply, but to lead.

Bringing Innovation to Life

Behind the design and execution of this groundbreaking project is our daughter company, Brim Tech. As the team responsible for bringing our innovative concepts to life, Brim Tech will lead the technical development and shipbuilding process of the new trimarans. Their deep understanding of electric vessel design and hands-on experience ensures that Brim Explorer can continue to offer state-of-the-art, low-impact experiences, now at higher speeds and with longer range. This collaboration strengthens our ability to bring scalable, sustainable maritime solutions to market.

"Supported by Enova, we are investing in the next-generation Brim Tech vessel that combines speed, range, and zero emissions, redefining the future of sustainable travel with Brim Explorer."

We’re proud to help lead the transition towards a more sustainable maritime industry, and we’re just getting started. Follow our journey as we bring silent speed and long-range electric travel to life.
